I migrated my SVN repository to Git yesterday and moved the XBBCode project to GitHub Drupal.org yesterday. The git migration should make it much easier to manage multiple branches for different Drupal core versions, and also make it much easier for others to contribute in case anyone is interested.
In other news, I implemented an idea from my last post, and made the nocode traversal algorithm much more simple and efficient. As with the original pairing algorithm, I don't know what I was thinking two years ago.
There are now two branches, for 7.x-1.x and 8.x-1.x, with the only difference in core compatibility. If it is similarly easy to port the current module back to 6.x, I could try that as well.
Edit: Actually, on reexamination, moved to Drupal.org. The reasons this project stayed out of d.o five years ago aren't really applicable anymore, since the module is now mature and the modules it appeared to duplicate are no longer under active development.
