The Commonwealth of Massachusetts embarked on a large-scale web replatform to modernize and make it easier to continuously improve the way the Commonwealth engages with and provides services to its constituents online. By improving the user experience for its constituents, and providing, as comprehensively as possible, a “single face of government”, Mass.gov® has become an essential platform in the Commonwealth’s ability to serve its constituents by delivering information and critical day-to-day social services to the Commonwealth’s 6.8 million people. With 15 million page views each month, the Mass.gov platform hosts over 400+ government agencies and content to support anyone who wants to move, visit, or do business in the state. All of which is fueled by the Commonwealth’s 600+ content authors, who have been able to use the platform to improve constituent satisfaction, making a noticeable positive difference on how the public sees their organization and the services they provide.

As early adopters of Drupal 8, Mass.gov and its ecosystem of web properties are the primary platforms for the delivery of government services and information in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Crain Communications is one of the largest privately owned media companies with more than 50 leading business, trade and consumer brands in North America, Europe and Asia. It boasts of delivering news to more than 6 million global business leaders.

Managing a number of websites, proved to be a challenge since each brand was operating on its own web platform. The new digital initiative was to ensure brand consistency and operational efficiency.

Providing a central governance model, it would help efficiently manage the different web properties while also lowering down the cost.

Srijan rolled out 15+ websites onto the new platform from the various framework without compromising on the best practices across SEO, performance, and media management.

The central digital publishing platform was built on Drupal 8, reducing the development time by half compared to an earlier estimate (if websites were done independently).

Eldum Rétt is an Icelandic subscription service that delivers food boxes complete with recipes and meal plans for home cooking to private households. The idea is to provide extremely flexible and varied offerings for customers of all family sizes that can be ordered and managed completely online, through a website and mobile apps. Eldum Rétt is the market leader in Iceland with thousands of customers and an annual turnover of close to 7 million US dollars.

As a customer centric company, Eldum Rétt has very complex requirements for its online services. Customers need to be able to for example to

  • individually configure their food boxes with recipes from a selected list
  • adjust the number of portions that they want to cook
  • select the days of the week they want food delivered for
  • manage their delivery times and places
  • change their subscription settings, e.g. to pause deliveries during absences

The original website was built in 2014 on Drupal 7 with Drupal Commerce and wasn’t flexible enough to sustainably accomodate all these requirements. So the decision was made to move the site to Drupal 8 and Drupal Commerce 2 and also add a React Native based mobile app that would communicate with the main Drupal driven website. This project went live in November 2018.

Mitsui Chemicals is a Japanese chemicals manufacturer that provides products and services to enrich people's lives across a wide range of fields, including automobiles, electronics and information, health and medical care, packaging, agriculture, building and building materials, and environmental energy.
The company's proportion of overseas sales, which was 17% at the time of its founding in 1997, increased to 44% by FY 2017. Looking to become a chemical group with a global presence and pushing forward with further overseas expansion, there was an urgent need for its website to foster a sense of trust and expectation throughout the group, while also establishing a platform to deliver appropriate information to local stakeholders tailored to each country’s particular circumstances.

Consequently, in 2018, Mitsui Chemicals rebuilt its website’s operating environment and content management system with support from Digital Circus. Adopting Drupal as a content management platform for the multiple websites that Mitsui Chemicals operates in each country, including Japan, Germany, Singapore and China, the site was renewed with a responsive new design.

For over 100 years The Wildlife Trusts (TWT) have been caring for Britain's wildlife. This UK-wide group of local wildlife charities now looks after 2,300 nature reserves, supported by a combined 800,000+ members, The Wildlife Trusts' UK website acts as a central hub for 46 local trusts, by managing content on nature reserves, volunteering, events, and member activities across the country.

TWT appointed CTI Digital as supplier to deliver a new Drupal 8 based platform for the nationwide web site and to act as framework for bringing local trusts into a single harmonised system.

Digital business registration in North Rhine-Westphalia

Since the 1st of July 2018, the new "Gewerbe-Service-Portal.NRW" has been providing citizen-friendly eGovernment by allowing company founders in the German federal state North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to electronically register a business from home. The implementation was carried out by publicplan GmbH on behalf of d-NRW AöR. With the aid of a clearly arranged online form, commercial registration can be transmitted to the responsible public authorities with just a few clicks. Furthermore, an integrated chatbot helps the user with questions.

Service portal

In addition to the business registration, the portal offers information to the topic “foundation of an enterprise”. Furthermore, users have access to all service providers of the "Einheitliche Ansprechpartner NRW" (EA NRW). The online service supports specialised staff in taking up a service occupation or professional authentification. The search for a competent trading supervision department can also occur via the “Verwaltungssuchmaschine” (VSM) that was developed by d-NRW and publicplan GmbH on behalf of the “Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Innovation, Digitalisierung und Energie NRW” (MWIDE). The VSM is a search engine specialized for information about the public sector.

Business registration together with Chatbot “Guido“

"Guido" is a smart dialogue assistant for questions. He ensures automatic retrievability of information in plain language and is also able to identify each business type by a key. The chatbot determines every suitable business type by approaching the key through request of information. After successful determination, it is automatically transmitted to the form. Therefore, “Guido” saves the complicated search for many similar types of business. The director of publicplan GmbH, Dr. Christian Knebel says: "Thanks to our numerous eGovernment projects, we can draw on a wealth of experience in order to implement such a comprehensive portal. publicplan's integrated chatbot technology is the perfect complement to a contemporary citizen service."

Terrence Higgins Trust are working towards a world where people living with HIV are empowered and supported to live healthy lives. We built a website that helps them access testing and counselling when they need it, and that campaigns for an end to discrimination.

To enhance interaction with audiences and represent the vast breadth and value of their work, we rebuilt the Terrence Higgins Trust’s core website and crucial online services, making them accessible to more, wherever.

The most recent estimate suggests there were 89,400 people living with HIV in England in 2016. Of these, around 10,400 are undiagnosed so do not know they are HIV positive.

However, diagnoses of HIV have been declining since their peak in 2005. This has come as a result of increased condom use, more regular testing, improved availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and quick response of medication to slow down virus growth, in turn slowing HIV.

The continuation of this positive decline depends on sustained prevention efforts from organisations like Terrence Higgins Trust - the largest voluntary sector provider of HIV and sexual health services in the UK.

Terrence Higgins Trust have ambitious goals. One of which is to contribute to the end of HIV transmissions, another to test 100,000 people per year for HIV. However, delivering on the strategy to achieve these goals requires a strong digital service available to all on any device.

The reality for the team at Terrence Higgins Trust was as follows:

- Parts of the corporate site spec were almost 10 years old
- A complex and expensive incumbent Content Management System making routine updates to website content time consuming and overall poor value for the cost of running the website
- Centralised editing meant that sharing out was made difficult
- Lack of responsiveness - only 36% of website traffic in 2016 was from desktop computers. 64% was from mobile or tablet but the site wasn’t optimised for it

Graywolf Press is a world-renowned independent publisher. Their books and authors have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the National Book Award.

Graywolf had a Drupal 7 powered website, but the design was dated, not responsive for mobile devices, and poorly reflected the brand. Online content wasn’t reaching their target audience or expressing the sense of community and mission of the organization. On the backend, editors were having a hard time working with limitations of their content tools, and critical data integrations were failing.

We were able to give our site a refresh that it needed, make it more flexible with React, and do more with Drupal 8 web services that we'd done before.

Since 1974, American Councils for International Education (AC) has been making international education accessible for all. And today, the organization has built a global community of 85 countries and 89,000 alumni through cultural and academic exchanges, research assessments, language immersion programs, and professional development. AC’s alumni include everyone from high school students to professionals, national leaders, ministers, members of parliament, ambassadors, and CEOs.

AC recently created a new set of strategic goals, and brought in Threespot, a digital communications agency, for a website redesign. The goals of the project were to expand global impact, strengthen the AC brand, and build a stronger understanding of their work. Threespot partnered with Inclind, AC’s ongoing Drupal development partner, to implement the new design and upgrade the website's functionality.

DC-based Threespot provides digital strategy, creative, and development services exclusively for organizations and ideas that align with their progressive values. The Kuusamo-based Ruka is one of Finland’s most popular ski resorts, which has garnered also international recognition for its high-quality training and competition facilities as well as for its available activities.

The diversity of the services on offer naturally benefit travelers visiting the area, but it also creates significant challenges to the updatability of the center’s website as well as the functionality of its online shop. The main problems were bad user experience, the lack of proper mobile support, missing integrations that caused loads of manual labor, and that even the smallest changes to the store required software development.

The online store was an outdated custom application. Drupal was previously familiar to Ruka, as the company’s website was built with Drupal 7 and they had experimented with Drupal 8.

Druid was chosen as a partner for building a new online store. The customer and the team chose to use a modern, headless approach to achieve the best possible user experience. The frontend of the online store was built with React whereas Drupal 8 and Commerce 2 were used for content management, integrating the online store to Point of Sale systems and Skidata Access Management software.

In addition, one of the project’s additional goals was to slowly migrate the content from the outdated Drupal 7 website to the new service.

The revamp for Ruka’s webshop began in March 2017, and the first revisions were published the following fall. In addition to technical revisions and interface integrations, the visual look of the website was also updated during the project. The whole project was carried out using the principles of the Scrum work management framework, and the composition of the team changed fluidly according to the project’s needs.

Mobomo’s engineering team migrated nasa.gov to the AWS cloud and onto Drupal, creating a responsively designed user-centric webby-award winning experience, while bringing Drupal innovation to a portfolio of web properties across the agency.

The Mobomo team architected, implemented and deployed several AWS based Drupal CMS solutions for NASA to serve a wide variety agency needs, ranging from the agency flagship www.nasa.gov, to the Science Mission Directorate’s science.nasa.gov in both English and in Spanish, to a multi-site platform and governance model for 30+ Drupal applications serving groups across 7 NASA centers.

We migrated and relaunched www.nasa.gov and all of its subdomain components in just 13 weeks. Our team sunset an aging, closed source system, and replaced it with a Drupal based open-source CMS powered by AWS. The Migration effort included 250,000+ pages and nearly 3 terabytes (TB) of content. Relaunch occurred without downtime or service interruption.

Since the beginning of our engagement with NASA, Mobomo has designed, developed and manage nearly 50 Drupal websites as well as continuously delivering cutting-edge enhancements in support of the agency’s most high-profile information campaigns and live stream events, highlighted by the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse , the largest web-traffic event in US government history serving 40 million viewers in the 6 hours of primary coverage.

While building a brand new Drupal site for the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, we discovered our clients had a large touchscreen display in their lobby that wasn’t living up to its full potential. We used the existing Drupal backend from the client’s Drupal 8 site to create a second frontend in React to replace the old touchscreen, and in doing so, meet all the client’s needs for an interactive display.

Introducing the biggest e-commerce platform built on top of Drupal Commerce.

LUSH, a British cosmetics company, worked with FFW to build a digital space that would inspire the same loyalty that their physical shops enjoyed all around the globe. LUSH is a vegetarian and vegan beauty and cosmetics company based out of England. The company has a core group of dedicated customers worldwide, most of whom purchase their products at LUSH’s retail shops.

With LUSH’s in-store sales far outweighing those online, LUSH wanted to create a digital experience that would perform scalably and reliably during huge sales while showcasing the best of the LUSH brand. As an ecologically aware, community-focused business, they knew their values aligned well with the values of many open source communities, such as Drupal. And when one of LUSH's partners referred them to FFW, everything clicked.

After the launch, the new LUSH website realized dramatic spikes in both web traffic and online sales. Website sessions increased by 75%, digital orders increased by a whopping 64%, and shopping cart abandonment decreased by 16%.

The brief.

Deeson was asked to support Imperial War Museums (IWM) in evaluating the effectiveness of their existing digital presence in helping them meet their strategic goals. After a strategic and technical audit, IWM elected to rebuild their website.

They tasked us with launching their new website as a groundbreaking "sixth site" to sit alongside the museum's five physical branches. The site needed to showcase the museum's rich content in compelling new ways.

We created a bold new website powered by Drupal 8 that is a confident declaration of what Imperial War Museums represents, and reflects the urgency and importance of the subject matter.

National Nurses United (NNU) is the largest union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States (US). NNU has unified three of the most active US nurses organizations: the California Nurses Association (CNA) / National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC), United American Nurses, and Massachusetts Nurses Association. NNU's charter is to focus on the improvement of patient care conditions and standards for nurses.

NNU chose Hook 42 to redesign, architect, and build their new Drupal 8 website. The project had a very tight timeline due to the end of life of their hosting provider. Hook 42 worked efficiently with the NNU team to get a successful D8 site up on time and under budget.

The Chicago Park District owns more than 8,800 acres of green space, making it the largest municipal park manager in the nation. The Chicago Park District’s more than 600 parks offer thousands of sports and physical activities as well as cultural and environmental programs for youth, adults, and seniors. The Chicago Park District is also responsible for 28 indoor pools, 50 outdoor pools, and 26 miles of lakefront including 23 swimming beaches plus one inland beach.

Clarity redesigned, built, and hosts the official website for the Chicago Park District (CPD). Clarity designed and developed this user-friendly, mobile-responsive site, with a unified look and feel and marketing emphasis to promote CPD’s parks, programs, and events. The new website acts as a solution focused on its customers – “front end” visitors of the website and “back end” content administers – both of whom have a wide scope of needs.

Specifically, the new site provides the following improvements and features:

  • New Content Management System (CMS) Platform
    • Drupal 8, the latest version of the popular open-source framework;
    • Allows CPD to more easily integrate and connect to third-party tools, such as
      • ActiveNet, which provides externally-hosted ecommerce functions;
      • AppliTrack, which provides job postings;
      • Bonfire, which provides procurement and contracting opportunities;
      • MailChimp, which provides newsletter signup capabilities.
  • Updated design based on user focus group reactions to the old site, including

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an international centre of excellence in child health care, and one of the UK’s biggest charities. The hospital website provides vital information to clinical professionals, parents and child patients. The charity depends on its website to support campaigns which look to raise £100m per year.

The hospital’s mission is to provide world-class clinical care and training, and to pioneer new research and treatments in partnership with other organisations for the benefit of children around the world.

The previous platform, a proprietary CMS, was hindering efforts towards achieving these goals. It could not handle substantial traffic loads, was difficult to edit, and was expensive to maintain. GOSH decided it was time for significant change, and reached out to CTI Digital for help.

Astellas wanted to create a global website, as well as be able to update and refresh its local sites. Each website’s objective was to provide the right information in a timely manner, and to create and maintain a channel between the company and its stakeholders.

Explore one of the twentieth century's most charismatic artworks using Drupal 8

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the most important institution of modern and contemporary art in Spain and internationally, contracted Biko to develop an ambitious project around Picasso's most charismatic artwork. The project has been recognized with a Webby as the best 2018 Cultural Institutions Website.

Located in the center of Madrid, it is a must see for tourists, art lovers and scholars. Its collection is intrinsically linked by history and time and perhaps its most iconic work is Guernica by Pablo Picasso.

To talk about Guernica is to talk about Spain’s most iconic 20th century work of art. Its life is intertwined with the history of Spain and of the world, from its creation in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, through its travels around the world, to its return to Spain after the transition to democracy.

What challenge did we take on?

The Museo Reina Sofia was conducting the most ambitious research that had ever been carried out about Guernica:

  • A comprehensive collection of all the documents that could be found related to the painting and its history.
  • The largest study of high-resolution images that has ever been carried out on a painting.

How could we take advantage of the online medium to create a digital product that would live up to expectations? That was the challenge that we faced, and which has kept us motivated from then until the launching of the site.

What did we do?

Our first challenge was to give form to the project, so we started with a joint definition phase with the researchers and those responsible at the Museum.

The results of this phase showed the need for a site structured in three sections:

  • Documentary archive, where site visitors can consult everything from the letters to Picasso commissioning the painting, to the photos of its arrival in Spain in 1981. A powerful search engine encourages the exploration of stories that explain the history of Guernica and provides additional information about its protagonists.
  • Chronology, through which the entire catalog of documentation can be explored using a spectacular interactive display.
  • Gigapixel, a technology that allows any user to discover Guernica from a perspective that was unthinkable before. The largest image of an artwork ever captured offers the possibility of studying the painting with natural, ultraviolet or infrared light, and X-rays.

MU Health Care is an academic health center comprised of five hospitals and nearly 60 primary and specialty-care clinics. MU Health Care has almost 6,000 employees and serves over 200,000 patients each year. MU Health Care also comprises the University of Missouri School of Medicine, whose physicians and scientists educate more than 1,000 medical students, residents and fellows, as well as more than 1,000 undergraduate students each semester.

The Situation

80% of Internet users have searched for health-related information online, including 49% who are looking for information on particular hospitals, doctors or treatment options. As the digital “front door” for MU Health Care, their website plays a critical role in attracting, educating and supporting patients, family members and healthcare providers. Unfortunately, MU Health Care’s website did not effectively support these audiences, was built on outdate proprietary software, and needed a holistic overhaul.

MU Health Care selected Centretek (a leading provider of open source solutions for healthcare) through a competitive RFP process. After an extensive digital strategy and discovery effort, Centretek recommended Drupal as the new web content management system (WCMS) and chose Acquia as the foundation to build upon and support this mission critical website.

Multisite Drupal Migration to Score the Best Fan Experience

Major League Soccer (MLS Digital) is a professional soccer league representing the sport's highest level in both the United States and Canada. Since its initial season in 1996, the league has expanded to include 22 teams - 19 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada. The organization sought Phase2’s assistance to migrate each team’s site to a single Drupal 7 platform.

A Customized, Flexible, and Consistent Platform

Migrating 20 club sites onto a new platform while maintaining the legacy platform was no small task. MLS also needed highly sophisticated customization options based on each team’s design, content priorities, and site maintainers’ capabilities. Each site had to have the same code base and capabilities, but offer full flexibility for each team’s site owners. At the same time, each legacy site had to be supported as the migration took place over several months.

In order to transform the way the department’s digital presence, they needed a centralized architecture that could accommodate dozens of agency sites and empower hundreds of editors with a streamlined publishing workflow. A Drupal platform enabled the department to deliver a mobile-first user experience that reflects the fervent pace of innovation found at the world’s authority on energy technology and policy.

The combination of an award-winning mobile-first design and tools that promote flexibility, centralized CMS management, and editor independence has made Energy.gov the standard-bearer for digital in the federal sphere.

Following the platform redesign in 2011, and a responsive retrofit in 2013, as a trusted long time partner, Phase2 provides ongoing day-to-day support which involves working with their hosting provider on ensuring the sites are up and running, available, and scaled appropriately, as well as feature enhancements and bug reports as they come through on a monthly development cycle. Our work is continuing to evolve together with a breakthrough redesign of Energy.gov slated to launch in early 2017.

Creating Truly Reusable Design Systems

Business.pinterest.com is the first in a series of marketing, business, and community sites that will help drive international growth for Pinterest. Ensuring that brand standards, design, and user experience are consistent across all properties is paramount.

A big component of this project was the integration of Pattern Lab Starter 8, Phase2's starter theme with Pattern Lab, which acts as the style guide, component library, and prototyping tool needed for a modern approach to theming. Pattern Lab Starter 8 uses Pattern Lab 2 and the same templating engine that powers Drupal 8: Twig.

The Consumer Center of North-Rhine Westphalia has set itself the goal to transform the joint internet project of German Consumer Centers - www.verbraucherzentrale.de - into a modern, interactive, up-to-date and continuously expandable portal. This portal is intended for two main target groups: consumers and multipliers.

]init[ designed and offered a well thought-through multi-client system. The underlying content-sharing approach and further editorial tools support the editor’s teams to maintain all content areas.

The contents of this consumer center are managed by a joint editorial team based in Düsseldorf, as well as the editorial offices of the individual consumer centers in each federal state.

It is important that the content work on the portals does not take place in one place, but rather that it is decentralized and adopted by the consumer associations throughout Germany. It is also important that the contents displayed on all linked portals can be partially adapted. This allows local consumer centers to make their regional consultancy services available on their respective regional contact pages.

Ferguson Voices is a joint project from PROOF and the University of Dayton Human Rights Center. Originally envisioned as a physical, traveling installation that marries audio with photography, TOKY saw an opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind digital experience. Ferguson Voices tells the story of the people of Ferguson, Missouri, before, during, and after Michael Brown, a young black man, was shot and killed by a white police officer in August, 2014.

TOKY specializes in digital and print work for architecture, engineering, and construction firms; high-end real estate development destinations; arts and cultural organizations; private schools and universities; and professional services.

NATA's Professional Development Center (PDC) offers e-learning courses that allow members to learn and earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through online quizzes, courses, and webinars. Skvare developed a collection of about 20 modules, called the Learning Management Suite, to run the system. This module suite not only provides the ability to create course content for the LMS, but also provides the ability for users to purchase courses with credits, generate LMS pass records, and restrict access to other sections of the courses.

ZKungFu is the largest directly operated Chinese food chain in China, using steam to prepare healthier food for their customers. The chain serves customers through 600 franchise locations in over 43 cities, four online 3rd party food ordering sites, and the Chinese social network WeChat.

In 2015, ZKungFu’s revenue reached 5 billion RMB (750 million USD). Operating at that scale requires advanced software for supply chain and inventory management, daily store operations, and corporate accounting. At that time the company used proprietary software for these tasks that simply wasn’t up to the challenge of delivering increasing integrability, flexibility, and scalability at a reasonable cost. Therefore, ZKungFu began that year to rebuild all of their software in house with open source technologies, including Drupal.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is a statutory body, established in 1966 as the international marketing arm for Hong Kong-based manufacturers, traders and service providers. They are the trade and development council for the city-state of Hong Kong, with more than 40 offices around the world, including 13 on the Chinese mainland.

The HKTDC wanted to create an unparalleled, robust and highly scalable Portal, that provides various resources on the Belt and Road Initiative (also known as “One Belt One Road” or the “Silk Road”) spearheaded by the Chinese. Ultimately, the HKTDC needed to improve the quality, functionality and reliability of their website, and decided that the best way forward was with a D8 migration.

Having consulted closely with the client, to establish deliverables, and finalize technical and functional requirements for the new site, Appnovation’s D8 team set about delivering the reimplementation of HKTDC’s Belt and Road portal.

As well as the overall Drupal migration work, a sizeable task in itself, the project also included a complete rebranding of their legacy website. Alongside this, Appnovation were tasked with implementing a wide-ranging number of new functionalities, improvements on existing functionalities, as well as migration of content from multiple sources, including internal and external web sources.

With the newly revitalized, robust and highly scalable portal, HKTDC’s brand was given a more modern and clean design.

One of the aspects the club has improved has been its digital services. It has invested a lot of resources and effort in its visual design, user experience and improving its online brand. With more than 30,000 subscribers, 1,6 million followers on Facebook, 825,000 on Twitter, 250,000 on Instagram and an average of 250,000 unique monthly visitors to its website, the club's goal is to acquire more visitors and followers in its digital channels at a juncture where the football team is going through a good run of results in European competitions.
